What does scabies look like?

Scabies usually shows as an intensely itchy rash of small red bumps or tiny blisters, often between the fingers and on the wrists, elbows, armpits, waist, buttocks and genitals. The itch is usually worse at night.

  • Small red bumps or a line of tiny blisters, often between the fingers, on the wrists and elbows, around the waist and navel, on the buttocks and genitals.
  • Itching under rings, bracelets and watch straps, where mites like to hide.
  • Thin, wavy grey or red lines where mites have burrowed. These are only visible in about a quarter of people.
  • Scratched areas can form scabs and become infected.
  • The face is usually not affected, except in babies.

Scabies can look like eczema, dermatitis or a fungal infection. If you are not sure what you are seeing, ask a doctor, nurse or pharmacist to look at it. See how scabies is diagnosed.
