What it is for

Skabi-Rid is indicated for the treatment of infestations with Sarcoptes scabiei (scabies).

How it works

Permethrin is a pyrethroid. It acts on the nerve cell membrane of the mite, disrupting the sodium channels that control the membrane's polarisation. This paralyses and kills the mite.

Permethrin is a synthetic relative of the pyrethrins, natural insecticides from the chrysanthemum plant. Chrysanthemums were grown in China as far back as the 15th century BC, and about 200 years ago people in central Asia discovered that dried, crushed flowers of certain chrysanthemums were toxic to insects. Permethrin is designed to stay stable in ultraviolet light while keeping that potent effect.

Why permethrin 5%

  • Recommended as first-line treatment for scabies in guidelines worldwide, and in the South African Standard Treatment Guidelines and Essential Medicines List for primary health care.
  • Listed on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
  • One application, left on overnight. The package insert says to repeat after two weeks if necessary.

Skabi-Rid was the first permethrin-only scabicide in South Africa. Its formulation was developed by the Research Institute for Industrial Pharmacy in Potchefstroom and tested in a randomised South African clinical trial.

How to use it

Shake the bottle. Apply over the whole body from the ears all the way down to the soles of the feet. Leave on overnight and wash off the following morning, after eight to twelve hours. Do not apply directly to the face. See the step-by-step guide.
