The first symptoms of scabies appear four to six weeks after contact. During that time people can pass the mites on without knowing they have them. Symptoms appear much sooner, within one to three days, in someone who has had scabies before.
That is why contacts are treated whether or not they itch. The treatment for contacts is exactly the same as for someone with symptoms: permethrin 5% lotion from the ears to the soles of the feet, left on overnight.
Who counts as a contact?
- Everyone who lives in the same home
- Partners and anyone who shares a bed
- Children who play closely together, and carers who look after them
- In hostels, crèches and care homes: residents, staff and carers in close contact
