Treating clothing and outdoor gear

How permethrin has been used to treat clothing, nets and outdoor gear. Off-label use.

A mosquito
A tick

Permethrin has been used to treat mosquito nets and clothing against malaria and tick bite fever since it came onto the market, especially by the military in the United States. Because it resists UV light and has a favourable side-effect profile, it has proven to be a safe and effective way of reducing disease carried by insects.

Skabi-Rid is an emulsifiable lotion that can be diluted 1:10 with water to make a 0.5% water-based permethrin emulsion. This has been used to soak or spray outerwear, bedding, socks, tents, backpacks and boots, with a residual effect of up to two weeks.

How it has been used for soaking clothing

  1. Treat outerwear only, not underwear.
  2. Mix 100 ml of Skabi-Rid into one litre of water in a bucket and stir well.
  3. Submerge the item until it is completely soaked.
  4. Wring it out by hand and hang it up. Only wear it once it is completely dry.

The same 0.5% mix can be used in a spray bottle. Spray until the item is damp, then hang it to dry before use.

S0 Skabi-Rid is a registered medicine (Reg. No. A40/13.2/0756). Read the package insert before use. If symptoms persist, see your doctor or pharmacist.
